Chipinge, Zimbabwe – April 14, 2025
The Chipinge community is mourning the loss of Phebion Machuwaire, a dedicated and veteran Councillor who served Ward 5 in Chipinge District for 25 remarkable years.
Machuwaire, a well-decorated war veteran, played a significant role in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle starting in 1970, later served in the Zimbabwe National Army, and then dedicated decades to local governance.
According to Assistant District Development Coordinator Mr. Chamunorwa Salani, Machuwaire was a long-term servant who never rested in his service.
“He started his services in 1970 as he played a bigger role in the liberation struggle, then he went on into Zimbabwe National Army, and then after that, that’s when he joined council,” said Salani.
Machuwaire’s extensive experience in local governance and public administration earned him a reputation as a stalwart leader. He successfully served five elected terms without defeat, a testament to his dedication and the trust placed in him by his constituents. The developments done in Ward 5 under Mutema Musikavanhu Constituency are credited to him.
Just days before his passing, Machuwaire chaired a Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission program aimed at raising awareness about illegal land transactions at Munyokowere.
O the day he passed on, he had chaired a finance meeting for the Chipinge Rural District Council.
“His tireless efforts to serve and protect the interests of his constituents have left an indelible mark on our district,” said a colleague.
Machuwaire’s passing is a significant loss to both the Chipinge Rural District Council and war veterans associations. Mourners have gathered at his homestead in Middle Sabi, Chipangayi, to pay their respects. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
The community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant and war veteran whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
