Zimbabwean Opposition Leader Elisabeth Valerio of the United Zimbabwe Alliance(UZA) says the extension of President Mnangagwa’s term in the office to 2030 violates the constitution.
The politician-cum-businesswoman chided Zanu PF for smuggling their factional fights into national politics as she rebuked the term extension while addressing journalists in Harare this Saturday.
“In 2028 we are expecting to go to the elections , and have the opportunity to vote our candidates and elect a new President for Zimbabwe which is our constitutional right and we therefore ask those in Zanu PF to keep their factional fights to themselves and do not involve the nation.”
Furthermore, “The government needs to respect the constitution of Zimbabwe and we are saying we do not in any way want to see a Zimbabwe where the rights of the people are violated unabated,”the UZA leader said.
The 2023 election presidential hopeful felt the youths are the most disadvantaged and would not want their dreams shattered because of the 2030 movement.
“Young people are wallowing in poverty and need jobs.So this 2030 mantra is just hollow to them they really need a party like UZA to fullfill their dreams.Trust me,we are going to guarantee that,” Valerio opined.
UZA has already started mobilising for 2028 elections.
Her remarks comes amid the infighting between Zanu PF factions that has already reached fever pitch.Of late,a retired brigadier general Blessed Geza has been holding explosive press conference calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to step down.Recent Heroes Acre burials have been marred with chaotic scenes of two Zanu PF factions-ED and Chiwenga, singing their loyalty to the two leaders.
