ZVISHAVANE – A 27-year-old man, Silent Muvadi, was arrested after a shooting incident at Sabi Mine in Zvishavane, Zimbabwe, on February 8, 2026.

In a statement this Monday, Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Midlands provincial spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Muvadi and a group of individuals had allegedly invaded the mine to prospect for gold illegally.

“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Silent Muvadi aged 27, in a shooting incident that occurred at Sabi Mining site in Zvishavane, Runde Constituency. The suspect was part of a group of people who had invaded Sabi Mine, Zvishavane allegedly to illegally prospect for gold on 8 February 2026 and at around 0900 hours,” Mahoko said.

“They were approached by Security Guards at the mine who intended to arrest them. It is alleged, the group fled but Muvadi, instead, charged towards the security guards wielding a chisel in one of his hands,” Mahoko added.

Inspector Mahoko said in view of the danger posed by the charge, one of the security guards who was armed then fired one shot and hit the victim on the thigh.

“The victim was subdued, arrested and handed over to ZRP Zvishavane. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound on the thigh and was referred to Zvishavane Hospital for treatment,” Mahoko said.

Meanwhile, Inspector Mahoko said a docket is being compiled whilst the suspect and his accomplices will be charged for trespassing into Sabi Gold Mine.

“We reiterate our call to the public not to resist lawful arrests. In the same vein, those with interests in mining should formally approach Ministry of Mines and Mining Development,” Mahoko added.

The incident highlights the risks of confronting security personnel and the importance of formal mining interests.
