Legislators have hailed the diplomatic five day training that they went through in Mutare noting that it had made them to explore the intricacies of international relations, understanding ceremonial protocol in fostering dialogue and peace as these are cornerstones upon which good leadership is built.
Speaking in his closing remarks for the Diplomatic Training Workshop for Parliamentarians And Staff Of Parliament, Honourable Sam Matema, Buhera Central Constituency legislator (ZANU PF), highlighted that the workshop had sharpened their skills in protocol, negotiation and interpersonal conduct moreso reminding them of the responsibilities they carry as representatives of the nation and the global stage.
“Our role is to safeguard the sovereignty of our country while promoting regional and international cooperation particularly under the ethos of Ubuntu/Hunhu-‘Iam because you are, and you are because we are’.This timeless African philosophy encapsulates the essence of diplomacy, mutual respect, cooperation and shared destiny.Hence, diplomacy is not merely about formality-it is about fostering understanding, building trust,and upholding the dignity of the offices we serve,” he said.
Hon Matema, who is also the Parliamentary Chairperson on Environment, Climate and Wildlife also noted that diplomatic knowledge plays a crucial role in national branding and attracting investment.
“In a world where perception often shapes reality, diplomacy becomes a vehicle for national branding, a strategic effort to attract investment, and open doors to new opportunities.Zimbabwe’s engagement and re-engagement agenda is testimony to this shift, and as Parliament, we complement these efforts with credibility and convi ction.This workshop has reinforced a fundamental truth that diplomacy is not just a tool of the Executive, it is equally a powerful instrument of Parliament, enabling us to engage effectively on the international stage through what is now recognised as Parliamentary diplomacy,” he said.
