The National Elections Reform Agenda (NERA) has condemned any plans to defer the 2028 elections to 2030
Manyara Irene Muyenziwa, the Convener of NERA, emphasized the importance of adhering to the electoral timetable, arguing that delaying elections undermines the voice of the people and threatens the very foundation of governance in Zimbabwe.
“Our nation has long suffered the consequences of electoral manipulation and political expediency. To suggest delaying elections disregards the voice of the people,” she stated.
As Zimbabwe currently holds the Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Muyenziwa warned that any move to postpone elections would not only damage public trust in the electoral process but also raise serious questions about accountability and governance.
“We cannot afford to compromise the integrity of our electoral processes. The time for genuine political will and comprehensive electoral reforms is now,” she insisted.
NERA called for a united front to uphold democratic values and ensure that citizens can exercise their rights to choose their leaders through credible elections. Muyenziwa urged all stakeholders to reject any proposals for postponement and to work together towards a transparent, inclusive, and accountable electoral system.
