Social media user’s have conveyed mixed reactions to the breakdown on stage by Selmor Manatsa nee Mutukudzi, at his father, the late music guru, Oliver Mutukudzi’s, commemorative gala at his Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton over the weekend.

While it might have been expected following her initial removal from the artist’s list that took social media outcry by Zimbabweans and some politician’s for the step mother Daisy Mutukudzi to reinlist her.

The matter seems to have further validated that which is often kept secret in society, to say, step parents are not always in good terms with thier step children as they seek a softer spot for thier children in their newly found marriages and that of the children they sire in that relationship, it is hard to swallow as perhaps the case in Selmors crush down.

While it has become public knowledge that the children who Oliver sired from his previous marriage are not in good books with Daisy, the issue of Oliver Mutukudzi’s music rights could have also played a part as Pakare Paye has artist’s who also play Oliver Mutukudzi’s music, potentially creating a contradiction.

As if to show Selmor as a good charecter in the whole ordeal, Buhera West legislator and former ZANU PF Director of Information and Publicity, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, narrated how Selmor had ceeded proceeds they had offered to her during COVID 19 to Daisy citing her as the rightfull recipient as a good turn that Daisy equally had to reverse when Selmor was removed from the list.

“In 2021 at the height of covid19, musicians and local artists could not hold shows and faced serious financial challenges. Cde PA Chinamasa as Acting Spokes and I as Director Infor engaged H.E Dr ED Mnangagwa with a position paper on introducing eGalas and Virtual concerts to commemorate key national holidays to cushion artists… National Hero Cde Oliver Mtukudzi had passed on. We didn’t have the widow’s contacts. We called Selmor Mtukudzi to collect the donations since she had been one of the key artists during the eGalas. She said ‘Cde Director, the widow is Mama Daisy and I can give you her contacts so she comes and collect since I have benefitted from participating in the galas. It’s not abt me and me alone.’ She gave the number to us and they came and joined others and collected. I don’t mean to participate in the debate but to bring this incident to your attention.” Mugwadi said on social media after Selmor’s removal.

However, the idea has not been muttually held as some social media influencer’s have not been of the same opinion as some felt Selmor was still trieng to depend on her father’s legacy when other artist’s had come and made names for themselves.

“Selmor Manatsa (no longer Mtukudzi) is a perfect example of what happens when a child inherits a parent’s bitterness. This is a married woman in her 40s who is still making drama over her father’s legacy & inheritance. It’s clear to anyone with common sense, she’s simply bitter her father Oliver Mtukudzi left her mother & married another woman.” Controversial Social media artist Shadaya said.

Furthermore, “She has been in the music industry for over 2 decades & the only thing she’s known about is her drama with her step mother. Many young female artists have come & forged their own names, but here she is clinging to her father’s glory. Does she even know why his father dumped his mother for Daisy?” Shadaya continued to say,

On the other hand, “You cannot expect step mother to treat you better when your father failed to, varume fix your relations nevana venyu muchiri vapenyu Kwete kuzonetsesa vakadzi. I blame Selomor’s husband for failing to provide leadership to his wife.” Taurai Kandishaya Epworth Legislator also said.

Social media user’s had varieng statements as other’s comforted while others blasted Selmor in a case that shows that the narration of bad relationship’s existing between step parents and children as the inheritence squables thereof gold true in Zimbabwean society.
