Chief Chiweshe was joined by prominent Glendale based Sangoma, Sekuru Nyangatanayi, in celebrating Africa Day at Excel Academy in Glendale today.

The belated celebrations were organised by an enterprising committee from Excel Acamedy and saw the teaching staff all dressed in traditional dress with the commemorations showcasing a display of our traditional grains.

Chief Chiweshe, who was the guest of honour at the celebrations challenged the students to respect their culture and to uphold the virtues of Ubuntu.

“As we celebrate Africa Day today, I could not have found any befitting opportunity to emphasize to you the the goodness of respecting, valuing and protecting our culture. The majority of you the youth of school-going age are the ones who are being found wanting. Our African cultured is undiluted so you have to toll the correct line lest you will grow to be an adult social misfit. This long-held wisdom grounded in the African phenomenon of Hunhu/Ubuntu-“hunhuism,”said the retired educationist Chief Chiweshe.

Sekuru Nyangatayani, who is also a philanthropist reinforced what had been said by Chief Chiweshe-a call for the preservation of our culture.

“As a traditionalist, I fully understand the need for the youth to uphold our traditional norms and values.Beyond this earth, there is a spirit world of our ancestors such as the spirit mediums Ambuya Nehanda and Sekuru Kanguvi. In African Tradition Religion (ATR) with respect that and follow it to the letter and spirit, so please the youth do likewise,” counselled Sekuru Nyangatanayi who also donated two goats and cash for the belated celebrations.
