Zimbabwe will this week join the rest of the world in commemorating international day of families, a move asserting the African value of the family unit’s centrality to peace, curtailment of Gender Based Violence, sustainability among other vast positive’s.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Monica Mutsvangwa emphasized the role the family has in socialising individuals to be of better character as well as it’s importance to reduce crime, drug abuse and the overal development of ethical societies.
“The family unit is the fundamental sub-unit of the community and the nation at large which acts as the prime framework where all citizens are socialized and equipped for their future roles in the development of the country.” Monica Mutsvangwa said.
Furthermore, “With stability being essential for growth, the family unit provides a strong, stable foundation from whence individuals are supported to succeed in their life endeavors. As such, a stable family unit is a necessary barrier against negative social vices and ills such as crime, poverty, GBV, drug and substance abuse and moral decadence.” Mutsvangwa reiterated.
The International theme for this year’s 30th commemoration of the International Day of Families is, “Families and Climate Change: The International Year of the Family + 30”
The main thematic areas for this year are, “1.Raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on the family unit. 2.Highlight the role that families can play in broader climate action initiatives. 3.To collectively plan and implement family empowerment initiatives focused on capacitating families with the knowledge and means to effectively respond to climate related challenges.” Mutsvangwa also emphasized.
The commemorations will be held on the 15th of May 2024 at Dotito Primary School in Mt Darwin District, Mashonaland Central Provine before a follow up of Provincial, District and Ward celebrations across the country.
