The death of flamboyant Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo in a helicopter crash has sent shockwaves through Citizens Against Economic Sanctions (CAES), with the organisation describing his death as a loss to both the nation and Zanu PF.

Chivayo, 43, died alongside his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, and four other people when the helicopter they were travelling in crashed in Marondera Rural, Mashonaland East, at about 5pm on Wednesday. Government confirmed that there were no survivors.

CAES chairman Ellison Muchenje, popularly known as Commander Samuriwo, said Chivayo’s death was a major loss.

“We are shocked with Sir Wicknell’s death. It is a loss to both the nation and our party Zanu PF,” Muchenje said.

Chivayo rose from humble beginnings in Chivhu to become one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent businessmen. Born in 1982 and raised in the Gandami area of Chivhu, he lost his father at a young age and left school as a teenager before entering the workforce. He later founded Intratrek Zimbabwe, an engineering and energy company that became associated with major infrastructure projects, including the 100-megawatt Gwanda Solar Project.

Beyond business, Chivayo became a high-profile figure through his philanthropy, sponsorship of sport and entertainment, and his close association with senior political figures. He was also known for his lavish lifestyle and expensive gifts to musicians, religious leaders and sporting personalities.

His business career was, however, not without controversy. His name was linked to legal disputes surrounding the Gwanda Solar Project, while his wealth and close political relationships frequently attracted public scrutiny. Chivayo denied wrongdoing and was acquitted in a fraud case connected to the solar project.

In the weeks before his death, Chivayo remained active in business and public life, including engagements outside Zimbabwe and his continued support for sport and other causes.

His sudden death has since triggered an outpouring of condolences from political, business, sporting and entertainment circles across Zimbabwe and the region.
