CHIPINGE – An attempt to evade apprehension was short-lived after a speed chase was launched by law enforcement operatives against a former member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Criminal Investigations Department, Cannias Mujera (52) who was arrested on February 2, 2026, for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.

Mujera, of Garikai Newstands, Gaza in Chipinge, was caught with 67 sachets of cannabis, 37 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, a digital scale and suspected crystal meth.

The ZRP Manicaland provincial spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed that Police received a tip-off about Mujera’s activities, leading to his arrest at TM Rank, Chipinge. He initially complied with a search warrant but attempted to flee, jumping out of his moving vehicle and abandoning a green bag containing the illicit substances.

Mujera, a former CID Chipinge officer, is currently detained as investigations continue. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is US$437-00.

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Zimbabwe.
